Ernst Von Hesse-Wartegg

Ernst von Hesse-Wartegg (1851–1918) was an Austrian travel writer whose books brought accounts of distant places to German-speaking readers at a time when steam travel and expanding print culture were making the wider world more accessible. He travelled widely, including in the Americas and Asia, and drew on what he saw to write about landscapes, cities, peoples, and public life. His work belongs to the tradition of popular travel and geographical writing: it aimed not only to describe a journey but also to give readers a broader picture of societies beyond Europe.

Among his best-known titles are Mexiko und die Mexikaner and Die Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika. Across his writing, close attention to place sits alongside an interest in how people live and how societies are organized. His prose is informative and observational, shaped by the traveller’s perspective rather than by the conventions of the novel. These books offer a window onto both the places Hesse-Wartegg visited and the questions that interested European readers encountering them. If you’re curious about travel writing from this period, his titles in the app make a good place to begin.
